From the hills, valleys, and ore deposits left behind by eons of ice ages, to the Native American spear points that still turn up in plowed fields, to the solid stone buildings lining High Street, history is everywhere in Mineral Point.
Although the history of Mineral Point encompasses everything from the glaciers, including the absence of the most recent one, the Native Americans who were the earliest inhabitants, and French furtraders who may have wandered down from the Wisconsin River, the part that has received the most attention involves the lead mining days and all that followed. The wonderful buildings of Mineral Point are a legacy of these days and are perhaps its most distinctive feature; this was recognized in 1971 when Mineral Point was the first historic district in Wisconsin to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
